Founded in 1999 by Brian Moran of New York and Colleen Catallo of New Hampshire, Brymor’s main focus is the breeding and sales of Irish Draught Sport Horses. Brian had been breeding horses for 25 years when he formed his partnership with Colleen. Both individuals have had a passionate interest in horses since childhood. Brian was 5 years old when he fell in love with the “Grey Ghost”. The Kentucky Derby was on TV and Native Dancer was the favorite to win the Triple Crown. In a heart breaker, Native Dancer lost by inches to a horse named Dark Star. The Derby was the only time in 22 career starts that Native Dancer did not finish first. From that year on, he never missed a race and always reminded everyone in the house of the day and time the next race would be televised. It should have been no surprise to anyone when he bought his first “Grey Ghost” whom he named Molly after his grandmother. As a youngster, Colleen spent all her summers at riding camps, taking lessons, hanging around the barns and cleaning stalls. The formation of Brymor Hills Horse Farm was a natural next step for Brian and Colleen to achieve their life goals.

Since the Irish Sport Horse has become a favorite among folks who enjoy English riding, jumping, dressage, and fox hunting and the market for this horse is stronger in the New England area than in Western New York, the original concept was to set up a general mode of operation where the horses would be bred at the New York facility then shipped to New Hampshire for training and preparation for sale. However, today breeding and sales take place at both locations.
Brymor breeds their horses utilizing artificial insemination. This method gives them the latitude to breed with any stallion in the country. Trips to the airport are common to pick up specimens. The stallions are chosen based upon their conformation and blood lines that emphasize a stable temperament as well as athletic ability. They base their selections on the “hybrid vigor” theory which is the ability to take the best of one breed and combine with the best of another breed to produce an animal superior to either parent. As Brian Moran describes “we strive to take the best traits of the Irish Draught which are stable mind, soundness and athleticism to combine with the speed and grace of the Thoroughbred”.
Operations continue to grow and in the summer of 2003, they maintained an average of 35 horses in New York and 12 in New Hampshire.
